Cuba seeks 2025 FIBA AmeriCup qualification with six absent players

HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 20 (ACN) With only nine of the 15 call up players so far, Cuba’s national basketball team will be opposite the Bahamas today at the Sir Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium in Nassau in a vital pool play game to secure a direct pass to the 2025 FIBA AmeriCup, to be held in Managua, Nicaragua, on August 23-31.

On top of the difficulties to get a visa for Puerto Rico, where Cuba will play its second game of the last qualifying window, comes the absence of six of the team's star players, namely Karel Guzmán, Howard Saint-Roos, Yoanki Mencia, Joan Carlos Gutiérrez, Arle Zaporta of Espiritu, and Ariel Ferrán Miró.

With two wins and two losses that keep it in third place of Group D, Team Cuba needs a victory over the Bahamians (1-3) to qualify for the continental tournament.
When they played in Havana in November 2024, Cuba notched up a 76-62 win.
