HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 11 (ACN) Cuba's U-17 men's national soccer team started its road to the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers with a 3-1 victory over St. Kitts and Nevis, in a match held in Alajuelense, Costa Rica.
After falling behind, the Cuban team came back in the final minutes to win the opening match of Group F on the road to the 2025 World Cup in Qatar.
In the 63rd minute, with the score 1-0 against, technical director Sandro Sevillano made three changes, including the entry of striker Lazaro Diaz, who scored in the 76th and 83rd minutes to tie the score and give Cuba the victory.
The finishing touch was provided by midfielder Cristian Bravo, who scored the definitive 3-1 goal in minute 90+4, unleashing total celebration from the Cuban bench.
The team coached by Sandro Sevillano showed a greater level of play, but failed to score for most of the match, the numbers show that they shot 11 times at the goal, compared to five for St. Kitts and Nevis.
The last time a Cuban U-17 men's team faced St. Kitts and Nevis in a CONCACAF qualifier was in 2016, when the Cuban team won with a resounding 5-0 victory.
To qualify for the third time to a U-17 World Championship, Cuba must lead its group after the two pending matches: this Wednesday against the Virgin Islands and on Friday, February 14, against the United States, the strongest opponent.
