HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 10 (ACN) The first stars of the national Greco-Roman wrestling team will leave in the coming days for China where they will carry out a training base for three months, Martin Torres, president of the Cuban Federation of this sport, told the Cuban News Agency.
Wrestles Kevin de Armas (60 kg), Yosvani Peña (77 kg), Daniel Gregorich (87 kg), and the world champion in Budapest 2023, Gabriel Rosillo (87 kg) will stay in the Asian nation to get in shape for the Pan American Wrestling Championship in Monterrey, scheduled for May 8 to 11.
Martin Torres, also national commissioner, explained that the four wrestlers will be received in the city of Wuhan, capital of the province of Hubei, by the two-time Olympic champion in Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000, the Cuban Filiberto Azcuy, who collaborates with the development of wrestling in China.
On January 15, Kevin de Armas, silver medalist at the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile 2023, will head to the eastern country with the aim of reaching his best level in his three-year career as a 60 kg titleholder in Cuba.
The stay of the Cuban wrestlers in the Chinese city will also have an impact on their preparation for the main challenge of the year, the World Championship, scheduled in Zagreb, Croatia, Sept. 13-21, 2025.
The arrival of Cuban athletes in China is a result of the recent strengthening of ties between the sports organizations and the Olympic Committees of both countries.
