Cuba finishes sixth at FIBA Centrobasket Women's Championship



HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 11 (ACN) Cuban women's team finished sixth in the Centrobasket in Irapuato, Mexico, a qualifying event for the 2025 America's Cup, with defending champion Puerto Rico dominating the tournament.

According to the tournament's website, Cubans fell 75-80 to the Virgin Islands on Sunday, with scores of 15-27, 24-22, 19-20 and 17-11, in an overall result that was below expectations, as they only managed two victories with three setbacks.

Cuba debuted with a 62-49 win against Costa Rica, but was then outclassed by Puerto Rico, 66-79, and El Salvador, 67-70, in that order, in the group stage, followed by a 94-42 win over Guatemala, at the start of the battle for fifth through eighth place.

Against the Virgin Islands, Rachel Contreras stood out for Cuba with 18 points, while Anisha Briana George (22) was the standout for the winners.

The Puerto Ricans defeated the Dominican Republic 84-75 in the title game and in a duel of undefeated teams, while the bronze medal went to Mexico, beating El Salvador 84-64.
