Cuba for 10th success in quarterfinals at IBA Youth World Boxing Championships

HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 28 (ACN) Cuba will seek today its tenth success and its fifth place in the quarterfinals of the Youth World Boxing Championship in Budva 2024, Montenegro, when Yojander Fuentes, in the 57 kilograms (kg) category, will be in action.

In his second appearance, Fuentes will face Georgios Pleas of Greece on Monday, and if he wins, he will achieve the 10th victory for the Caribbean island and the fifth place in the quarterfinals.

Previously, Javier Alexander Rawlins (86 kg), Angel Manuel Sober (48 kg), Yurisniel Abreu (75 kg) and David Manuel Espinosa (67 kg) had achieved victories and tickets to the quarterfinals.

The three defeats of the Cubans were suffered by Kevin Sanchez (54 kg), Jorge Luis Mayeta (80 kg) and Yoelvis Leyan Tejera (63.5 kg), the latter in a tight bout in which specialists highlighted that it was an unfair 1-3 adverse decision.

On Tuesday, Sober is scheduled to fight against Azerbaijan's Bilalhabasi Nazarov in the 48 kg, Espinosa against Moldova's Daniil Guranda (67 kg), Abreu against Kazakhstan's Sanzhar-Ali Begaliyev and Rawlins against Russia's Kamil Dzhamaev (86 kg), a quartet of Cubans who will fight for new successes and continue advancing in the organization table towards the possible discussion of medals.

Cuba participates in the Montenegro tournament with eight boxers with the aim of improving the result achieved in La Nucia 2022, Spain, (two gold medals, one silver and three bronze) as stated by the head coach, Santiago Suarez, supported by coaches Walfrido Ilizastigui and Armando David Camara.
According to the technical meeting of the world championship, 593 fighters -413 men and 180 women- from 73 countries are participating.
