HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 28 (ACN) The Cuban para athletes brought joy to the opening ceremony of the 27th Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, with Place de la Concorde and the Champs Elysées as the main stage for the celebration.
Cuba’s world record holders and Tokyo 2020 champions Omara Durand and Robiel Yankiel were the standard-bearers of the island’s delegation—the 40th on the list of 182 parading countries—whose members followed them marching to the beat of the music.
As in Japan four years ago, Omara is heavy favorite to secure a hat trick of gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 400m T12 events. If she does, she will boast 11 titles at this level, whereas long-jumper Robiel will seek his second one.
Cuba’s goal is to win around 10 medals, including four or five gold ones, and finish among the top 25 countries.
The 2024 Paralympics gather 4,400 athletes from 182 countries who suffer from physical, intellectual and visual disabilities and paralysis or brain injury.
