HAVANA, Cuba, May 10 (ACN) Cuban freestyle wrestlers Laura Herin, 53 kilograms (kg), and Yaynelis Sanz (57 kg), lost their chances to attend the Paris 2024 Olympic Games today, in the world wrestling qualifier held in Istanbul.
Both athletes had two victories before falling in the quarterfinals, so they expected the possibility of advancing to the repechage and at least placing third in their respective divisions, which ultimately did not happen.
As it turned out, their victims in the round of eight fell in the semifinals and did not drag them to the repechage, which was the option left to the Cuban wrestlers.
Herin debuted with an 18-8 success by technical superiority (TS) against Gultakin Shirinova of Azerbaijan and then defeated Veronika Rjavovolova of Macedonia 10-0 by TS, but then lost 4-5 in a close match against Hungary's Sztalvira Orsos, according to the official website of the competition.
Her teammate Sanz, opened with a 7-4 win against the Romanian Kateryna Zhydachevska, and then defeated the Bulgarian Evelina Nikolova 15-4 by ST and in the quarterfinal round, Cuban wrestler was ahead in the scoreboard 6-2 against her opponent, but Laylokhon Sobirova, from Azerbaijan, won by punch.
Cuba has 10 assured tickets in the wrestling for the upcoming summer event, with five wrestlers, three men's freestyle and two women's freestyle athletes.
The world pre-Olympic in Turkey will be the last of the six qualifying events for Paris 2024, and will grant 54 places, three in each division.
