HAVANA, Cuba, Apr 9 (ACN) Cuba will be represented by Taymara Oropesa at the Pan American Badminton Championship, which will begin tomorrow in Guatemala and will conclude on the 13th, a tournament that will close the Olympic qualifying process in the continent.
Oropesa, bronze medalist at the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile 2023, and winner of the silver medal at the Central Caribbean Games in San Salvador, also last year, will try to score valuable points for the world ranking and keep her chances of qualifying for the summer event.
Last March, the Cuban racquet player won the women's singles title at the 22nd edition of the Giraldilla International Tournament in Havana, where she added 1,700 units to her ranking.
Orlando Cala, national commissioner of that sport, told the Cuban News Agency that once the continental event is over, she must compete in the new Pan American beach tournament of that same discipline.
Cala pointed out that the on-court competition will award 7,000 points for the world ranking to the winners in each of the five events, singles and doubles in both sexes, as well as in mixed doubles.
He explained that badminton players must accumulate more than 1,000 units for the ranking just by passing a round, which is why it is of great importance for Oropesa, who still has options to guarantee his ticket to the Paris 2024 Olympic.
The level of the competition in Guatemala will be quite high, with the presence of the best players of the continent, he concluded.
