
HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 16 (ACN) Cuba opened today its action without medals on the first day of the Grand Slam of judo in Baku, Azerbaijan, a competition that will conclude this Sunday with the presence of 404 athletes from 62 countries.
According to the International Federation's website www.ijf.org, the first Cubans to compete were Jonathan Charon, in the 60 kilograms (kg), and Orlando Polanco (66 kg).
Charon won his first bout by Waazari against Israeli Ariel Shulman, but then lost by Ippon against Russian Rasaman Abdulaev, who competes for the neutral team.
Polanco had a quicker loss, as he lost by Wazari in his debut against Ukrainian Bubdan Iadov, number nine in the world ranking.
Cuba registered six judokas, four men and two women, and this Saturday Maylin del Toro (63 kg) and Magdiel Estrada (73 kg) will be in action, while on Sunday Idalis Ortiz (+78 kg) and Ivan Silva (90 kg) will fight.
The 226 men and 178 women registered for the tournament are seeking points for the world ranking that defines the Olympic roster for the Paris 2024 Games.
The Baku Grand Slam is the second commitment of the Cubans, who are also attending the Grand Prix as part of their training bases in France for the women and Hungary for the men.
