
HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 19 (ACN) Cubans Jorge de Jesus Perez and Roxangel Obregon lead the Cuban team that will participate from Thursday in the World Youth Chess Championship in the Mexican capital.
They won their places as winners of the qualifying tournament held in the city of Santa Clara (central Cuba) and will be accompanied this time by Ineymig Hernandez, Kemel Gallo and Roberto Alejandro Ramos.
The event for people under 20 years of age was convened with two separate competitions, one called open and without distinction of sex, and the other only for women.
In both cases, the program announced by the organizers is of 11 rounds by the Swiss System, with 90 minutes for the first 40 moves and 30 minutes more until the end, always with an increment of 30 seconds after each move made.
For the Open, 150 players from 52 nations have registered, among them 14 grandmasters and 28 international masters.
Cuba has two champions in these universal tournaments; in the 1986 edition, Walter Arencibia was crowned and in the 2000 edition, Lazaro Bruzon was the winner.
The best of a woman is represented by Maritza Arribas, with the fifth place in 1989, and she is also the one with the greatest presence in these tournaments, with four participations.
