MATANZAS, Cuba, Aug 1 (ACN) To maintain high levels of immunity in vulnerable population groups, the western province of Matanzas is currently promoting COVID-19 booster vaccinations to combat variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
Dr. Berta Maria Bello Rodriguez, deputy director of Epidemiology in Matanzas, explained that the province currently has the Cuban Soberana 02 vaccine available in multi-dose vials (10 doses) for booster administration. For people with specific allergies, the single-dose Abdala without thiomersal is available, Bello Rodriguez clarified.
She also specified that 16,448 booster doses had been administered in Matanzas by the end of June, a figure that already exceeds 25,000 in July.
The COVID-19 booster vaccination is part of the program that the Cuban health system has been promoting since 2021 to strengthen the defense against serious illness in adults over 65, healthcare workers, and patients and staff of nursing homes and senior centers.
According to Bello Rodriguez, these priority groups include chronic psychiatric patients and people with non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and chronic kidney failure, who receive the vaccine in all health areas of the province.
Adults belonging to risk groups can and should be vaccinated every year; the health system is obligated to vaccinate them, but the public can also request a dose at designated vaccination centers, she clarified.
Dr. Bello Rodriguez emphasized the safety of Cuban vaccines, indicating that no serious adverse reactions have been reported, with pain at the injection site being the most common complaint.
