HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 28 (ACN) As 2023 draws to a close, Primary Health Care stands as a key pillar of the Cuban Revolution, whose strength lies in a great army of highly qualified white-coated professionals ready to provide quality medical assistance to the population.
Ailuj Casanova Barreto, national director of Primary Health Care at the Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP), acknowledged that the 3rd Congress of Family Medicine, held in November after a 10-year hiatus, was all the more important because of the onset of COVID-19, as Cuba’s entire medical community became frontline responders throughout the pandemic.
“The Congress discussed crucial issues of our 2024 agenda, such as the training and management of human resources, the incidence of chronic non-communicable diseases, the Mother and Child Care Program, population aging, and health prevention and promotion,” she pointed out.
She also underscored as some of MINSAP’s main challenges the maintenance of the Family Doctor and Nurse Program—Community Medicine’s governing platform—the permanent presence of professionals in the offices, and the improvement of primary care services at community level.
As to the newly approved Public Health Act, the specialist said it is the first time that a national piece of legislation enshrines the Family Doctor and Nurse Program, established on January 4, 1984 by Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro Ruz.
