International meeting promotes economic alliances for food security



HAVANA, Cuba, January 29 (ACN) Attended by 50 enterprises engaged in new management models, a seminar organized by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is discussing ways to strengthen food security and nutrition through cooperation with the private sector.

According to Etienne Labande, WFP representative in Cuba, the eventis part of the agency’s strategic plans to supportvulnerable population groups with the collaboration of Cuba’s InstitutoNacional de ActoresEconómico No Estatales (National Institute of Non-State Economic Stakeholders) and theChamber of Commerce.

In recognition of the role played in today's society by SMEs, local development projects, non-agricultural cooperatives, and self-employed workers, the seminar provides a space for training and exchange focused on exploring opportunities for future cooperation.

Among the topics addressed on the opening day were integrated and climate-resilient local food systems, strengthening of social protection programs, and preparedness for and response to natural disasters, as well as logistics, digitalizationand communication logistics to promote healthy eating habits, gender equality, and youth engagement.

 Conceived as a platform to build strategic alliances, identify ongoing actions, and promote sustainable solutions, the seminar gathers representatives from government institutions, international organizations, and Cuba-based United Nations agencies.

WFP started cooperation with Cuba began in 1963 by assisting the victims of Hurricane Flora and has launched some 26 emergency operations and 12 development projects ever since, which demonstrates its permanent commitment to the progress and resilience of the Caribbean nation.
