SANTA CLARA, Cuba, January 2 (ACN) The Acuapla Basic Business Unit, located in the Villa Clara municipality of Placetas, aims to increase fish production by capturing more than three million fingerlings in the 17 micro-reservoirs in the area by 2026.
Alexis García Pérez, director of the entity belonging to the Pescavilla Company, told the Cuban News Agency that to achieve this goal, the institution is currently fertilizing the small reservoirs, which will allow for higher yields.
He mentioned that three tobacco farmers from the area have ventured into aquaculture and will supply the necessary organic raw materials to fertilize each of the micro-reservoirs they have taken over.
García Pérez noted that the center has 48 employees, 28 of whom are fishermen working in the municipality itself, while others support the harvest at the Minerva Reservoir, located in Santa Clara.
He added that in 2025 the institution captured 148 tons (t) of fingerlings, falling short of its target of 80 t; however, through the sales plan, it managed to close the year with a profit of 182,000 pesos.
Known as the City of Laurels, the municipality of Placetas stands out for having the largest number of micro-dams in Villa Clara: 17, two of which, located in Nazareno and Valles de Guaracabuya, are inaccessible due to the poor condition of the roads.
