Cuban farm, a commitment to development of rural tourism

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Mar 31 (ACN) More than an integral fruit farm, Monte de Sion, owned by prominent producer Roberto Montero Fuentes, in the municipality of San Luis, in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, is an example of crop diversification.

Here, the use of agroecology and advances in science and technology, resilience and sustainability are combined, said Oswel Acosta, representative of the ECOTUR Agency in the territory.

He said that a contract had been signed with Montero Fuentes and pointed out that the farm was one of those in this province that could welcome international visitors, as it happened in the 14th edition of the International Nature Tourism Event: TURNAT 2024.

We have received tour operators from Italy, Germany and national representatives, specialized press, teams of travel agencies and hotel chains, as well as directors of the National Botanical Garden and the Agrarian University of Havana, and also some tourists, who qualify Monte de Sión as a true agricultural jewel, the producer said proudly.

Located in Cayajabo, a few meters from the national highway in San Luis, the farm has not lost its main purpose and the 40 hectares (ha) that compose it grow mangos, sapotes, guavas, tamarind, cherries, lemon, pineapple, loquat, anon, soursop, tangerine, apricot, cashew, avocado and other species, while crops such as pumpkin, donkey banana and fruit, cassava and sweet potato are greening.

Also noteworthy is the planting of three hectares of coffee, which are already in production, Montero Fuentes pointed out.

The property is part of the novel experience of planting fruit trees without neglecting other crops and the aromatic bean, which makes it an example of diversification and commitment to the land, food production and the development of the country, said Yalena Vaillant, a specialist in International Cooperation, Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment for the municipality.

Monte de Sion uses the heritage, cultural and natural values of San Luis from a sustainable perspective, which will allow visitors to enjoy a healthy environment, while contributing to the growth of the local economy.
