Cuba renegotiates debt with Paris Club

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 19 (ACN) In a post on X, the Cuban Foreign Ministry (MINREX) announced that the Paris Club agreed to reschedule the island’s foreign debt and expressed its gratitude for the group’s sensitivity toward and understanding of the difficult situation facing Cuba nowadays.

The decision came at a meeting in Paris on 9-10 June between Cuban deputy prime minister Ricardo Cabrisas and Paris Club president Bertrand Dumont in the presence of representatives of the 14 creditor countries.

According to MINREX, the two parties agreed to modify their debt payment agreement, which gives Cuba more leeway to fulfill its commitments in its current challenging economic scenario.

Mr. Cabrisas described the impact of the U.S. blockade―imposed more than six decades ago and intensified in recent years―as the main obstacle to Cuba’s development and thanked the group, as well as the European Union in general and France in particular for their role in the negotiations.

He also reasserted Cuba’s commitment to comply with its obligations to the creditors, namely Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
