Foreign Investment Boosts Upgrade of Cuban Sugar Mills



Havana, Jun 3 (ACN) Cuba is boosting the upgrade of Cuban sugar mills through 16 foreign investment projects, said Lourdes Castellanos, director of International Relations, Business, Investment and Communication of the Azcuba Sugar Conglomerate.

Castellanos told the local Granma newspaper that new investment favor the use of efficient technology in the cultivation, watering, drainage, harvest and transport activities to increase yield and rehabilitate different areas of sugar mills. This would allow for higher industrial efficiency and operational reliability to increase sugar production and electric generations, and at the same time lower production costs.

The investment will also allow building a new sugar mill, which will have its own sugar refinery, a 100-megawatt power generation bloc and an alcohol distillery.

At present, the sugar conglomerate focuses on the development of organic products in a sugar mill along the production of sorbitol and sweeteners, and on the modernization and upgrade of a boiler factory.
