Catalan tourists toured historic sites in Cuban eastern province

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Mar 19 (ACN) As part of the activities of the national campaign "Cuba Unica" (Unique Cuba), Catalan tourists toured historical and heritage sites in Santiago de Cuba.

The Havana-based Cubatur Travel Agency, in coordination with the Office of the City Curator (OCC) promoted the foreign visitors to visit the Holy Basilica Metropolitan Church Cathedral, the house of Diego Velazquez, which holds the distinction of being the oldest in Cuba, the fortification of the Castle of San Pedro de la Roca and Granma Key.

According to the city's curator, Omar Lopez, it was necessary to distinguish the six characteristic landscapes of the city and explore the cultural and esthetic concepts of the 383 years of colonial life, 60 years of republican life and the last 65 years of the Revolution.

Lopez recalled the privilege of having been the seat of the bishopric in the country since 1522 and capital of the island in the first third of the 16th century.

At the Museum of Rum, another emblematic place in the Hero City, Danelis Garcia, an exhibitor of the site, detailed the transfer of the roots of sugar cane by Christopher Columbus, the mechanisms of rum processing in the 17th century and stressed the relevance of the first Cuban light rum, registered in 1862 by Facundo Bacardi, of Catalan origin, and the Frenchman Luis Pourtier.

The climax of the event was the pilgrimage to the sacred altar of the homeland in the city's Santa Ifigenia patrimonial cemetery.
