New transport fares will not affect 75% of passengers

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 9 (ACN) Despite the necessary price rise in transport fares recently announced by the Cuban government, 75.8 % of passengers will not be affected, according to Minister of Transport Eduardo Rodríguez Dávila.

The official stressed that even if all fares will be modified for passenger and cargo services, the customers will not necessarily have to pay more for public transport, since the differences in many cases will be defrayed by either the State Budget or the entrepreneurial system.

“For instance, the prices of urban, suburban, interurban, rural and other forms of transport will not change,” he remarked, “which means that the State will allocate subsidies worth more than two billion pesos.”

In the most recent Assembly of People's Power, the Government announced a number of measures—including higher prices for public transport, fuel and electric power—intended to boost the economy and correct wrong practices.
