HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 7 (ACN) The Cuban agronomist and experienced farmer Francisco Hernández Rodríguez has developed a groundbreaking project to produce ecological potato seeds the conservation of which relies on silica sand.
His plan is to grow potatoes using different methods with a view to obtaining affordable high quality seeds that need no cold store until the next season—and, therefore, allow to save power—given that silica sand is porous enough to absorb water vapor and atmospheric gases and thus reduce humidity levels detrimental to the tuber.
Hernández Rodríguez remarked that this form of production would save Cuba about two million dollars that the country would otherwise have to pay to guarantee the harvest.
The farmer will soon present his project, funded by the Regional Office of the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment, to Cuban agricultural authorities.
