Cuban farmer produces organic seed potatoes

NUEVA GERONA, Cuba, Jan 3 (ACN) Agronomist Francisco (Paquito) Hernandez Rodriguez -a farmer with extensive experience-, has developed an innovative project on the Isle of Youth to produce ecological potato seeds, whose conservation is based on the use of silica sand.

He explained to the Cuban News Agency that the intention is to plant several parcels of the root vegetable with different methods: botanical seed, grelos, postures from grelos and cuttings, with the aim of obtaining high quality and low cost seeds, which can be stored out of refrigeration until the next season.

According to the experienced producer, silica sand has the right porosity to absorb water vapor and gases present in the atmosphere, exceptional properties in order to reduce humidity levels, which cause oxidation, deterioration and molding of the tuber.

In addition, the use of this material -whose main mineral component is quartz- saves electricity, since no refrigerator is needed to preserve the seeds.

Hernandez Rodriguez said that producing the seed in this special municipality, where he has his farm La Granjita, would save the country about 2 million dollars, an import cost that the Cuban government assumes to guarantee the campaign.
