HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 15 (ACN) The president of the Cuba-Petroleum Union (Cupet), Osvaldo López Corso, informed that after a decade of a three to seven percent (%) annual decrease in crude oil production, just a few days ago the production plan for 2021 was achieved and yearly extraction will grow 4 percent.
According to what he told Granma newspaper, the result is achieved despite many difficulties derived from COVID-19 and the scarcity of resources.
He added that the reasons for this positive balance are to be found in the drilling of wells to the west of the Varadero field, as well as the discovery of a new field to the east of Santa Cruz del Norte city, where three wells have been drilled with high productions.
He explained that among the factors that have contributed to reach these figures are the attention to the Producing Wells Fund, which this year has had efficiency coefficients above 98%, as well as the work of all Cupet's workers, researchers and directors.
He also mentioned that most of this production will be used for electricity generation and stressed that, although it is not all that is needed, it means a step closer to guaranteeing Cuba´s energy sovereignty.
