Frei Betto recognizes the advances of Cuban Food Sovereignty Plan

HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 26 (ACN) Frei Betto, advisor to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), acknowledged advances in the implementation of Cuba's Food Sovereignty and Nutritional Education Plan.

Cubadebate reported today that in a tour of farming communities in Mayabeque province(western region), the Brazilian writer and popular educator was concerned about the food distribution process and its links with schools, children's institutions, maternal homes and families.
In addition, in the Zaragoza community he could see the exploitation of the soil by the farmers, who use small plots of land.

"I leave this place very impressed and happy to know that these farms are examples of Food Sovereignty and Nutritional Education in this country, which has all the potential to become independent in terms of food," Frei Betto said.

On Thursday, there was the official presentation of the Information, Management and Innovation System for Monitoring and Evaluation of Food Sovereignty and Nutritional Education ( SIGISAN by its Spanish acronym), a project of international collaboration, which has the National Association of Economists and Accountants as executing party.

With FAO support, SIGISAN plans to implement actions in Pinar del Rio, Artemisa, Havana, Villa Clara and Granma provinces over a 4-year period.
