Importation of technology is expected to improve results in citrus production in Cuba.

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 28 (ACN) Citrus production in Cuba has declined in recent years, partly due to the lack of the necessary technology. Arrangements are on the way to import certain machinery in order to improve these yields.

The availability of agricultural equipment has been very unstable in recent years, even more so in 2020 due to the impossibility of accessing funds, Grupo Empresarial Agrícola (GAG) explained.

A press release posted on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture (Minag) mentions efforts to coordinate with citrus enterprises the selection of areas with productive potential in order to exploit them using consumables purchased with their own sales revenues, even if the pandemic has prevented them from making progress in their negotiations with possible suppliers.

The Ministry of Economy and Planning has approved US$ 22,440,000 for imports intended to support the 2020 Citrus Recovery Program. The interrupted banking operations and contractual arrangements are soon to be resumed thanks to foreign credits received by Cuban agricultural enterprises.

Despite the aforesaid efforts, it must be taken into account that the effect of pests and diseases, and the lack of sufficient resources to attend to the plantations have also affected citrus production.
