Cuba receives funds raised in Australia to face COVID-19

HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 12 (ACN) Cuba received a cash donation amounting 58,000 Australian dollars to support its efforts in confronting the coronavirus pandemic, thanks to a fundraising campaign promoted by the Australia-Cuba Friendship Association (ACFS).

The donations will allow the country to acquire the necessary medical supplies in the face of COVID-19, according to the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as the ACFS is aware of the difficulties imposed on the Cuban people by the unjust US blockade.

Between May and July, the ACFS developed a successful initiative through the My Cause web platform to attract donations, which received numerous contributions from Australian friends, including members of the business sector, as well as the support of many other people.

Different ACFS branches have joined the campaign that is taking place today in various parts of the world to support the nomination of the Cuban medical brigade Henry Reeve for the Nobel Peace Prize.

After its creation in 1982, the ACFS has promoted dissimilar actions on Australian soil against the blockade, subversion plans against Cuba and in favor of the return of the territory illegally occupied by the United States in Guantánamo.

In addition, it has worked together with the Cuban Friendship Institute in the development of community projects on the Caribbean island and, since 1984; it has sent solidarity brigades year after year to the Caimito International Camp, in the province of Artemisa.

Cuba and Australia have maintained historical and uninterrupted relations for more than 150 years, and they still have a long way to go in areas such as education, sports, biotechnology, mining, energy and the pharmaceutical industry.

Both countries have coinciding positions on issues such as climate change, defense of freedom of trade and navigation and rejection of the imposition of unilateral coercive measures.
