SANCTI SPIRITUS, Cuba, Feb 21 (ACN) The Cuban Tobacco Business Group (TABACUBA by its Spanish acronym) intends to increase exports of this product this year, according to information from a meeting that reviewed the work carried out in 2019 by this entity.
Last year, exports of the mentioned business group had sales for close to 270 million USD, and for the present working period the objective is to increase another 10 million; and this has been conceived maintaining the quality of the Cuban cigar that ensures its leadership at international level.
In the 2018-2019 tobacco campaign, the planting program was surpassed, but it harvested 97.3 percent of what was planted, while the collection barely reached 83 percent of what was expected, due to losses of seedlings due to rains, insufficient contracting and lack of products to control blue mold, among other reasons, which affected agricultural yields in the fields.
Justo Luis Fuentes Diaz, president of TABACUBA recognized the effort made last year to fulfill the main economic and productive indicators, given the difficult situation that the country went through, mainly due to the tight economic, financial and commercial blockade of the United States government against the country.
The executive called on officials, specialists and technicians of the sector to intensify the attention, with a differentiated character, to agricultural producers and to the bullfighters in the so-called tobacco stores, because it is there where the success of the work is achieved.
Besides the main social object of this business group, its entities also contribute to the production of food for the population, and evidence of this is that in this phase more than 562.600 tons of food, grains, fruit trees and vegetables were produced, as well as around 2.442.000 liters of milk.
