Cuba and Syria sign cultural agreementHavana, Sep 24 (ACN) Alpidio Alonso, Minister of Culture, and Idris Maya, Syrian Ambassador to Cuba, signed an agreement to strengthen cultural exchange between the two countries, Prensa Latina reported.

The Cuban Minister said it will increase collaboration in various expressions, the exchange of artists, performers and specialists and participation in festivals and international events.
Both sides commit themselves to encourage invitations to writers and other experts in literature, foster information exchange on visual arts development, production of works of art and exhibitions in each country.
They will also cooperate in the conservation, restoration and preservation of cultural property, as well as in the protection of heritage; they will work to hold film festivals and film production as well as establish cooperative relations between their respective national libraries.
Alfonso and Maya debated the possibility that the Syrian Minister of Culture would visit Cuba and that the Cuban official would travel to Damascus at appropriate times to host festivals and events.
During the talks, the Cuban Minister condemned the 'terrorist and mercenary war' that Syria has suffered in recent years and stressed that the damages of these conflicts are not merely political, economic and social, but also affect the culture of the nations.
He recalled in that last point how the Baghdad Museum was emptied during the 2003 U.S. invasion, an institution that treasured valuable collections and relics of the emergence and development of civilization.
