Cuba hosts International Mural Painting Biennial

SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, January 11 (ACN) The 17th International Mural Painting Biennial, "Internos 2026," is taking place in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba, serving as a space for artistic growth and the beautification of the urban environment of this southeastern city.

Israel Tamayo, a member of the Organizing Committee, told the Cuban News Agency that the boom in mural painting worldwide in recent years has solidified this art form as one of the most creative expressions, capable of attracting the attention of millions of viewers and painters, both professional and amateur.

He noted that, despite logistical difficulties and the complex context facing the country, they will continue developing murals through projects and artistic collaborations.

Tamayo thanked those who have contributed to the Biennial over the years, which has bequeathed more than 170 works to the indomitable city, enhancing its beauty and ambiance.

He also emphasized that Internos fosters the spiritual, personal, and professional growth of its participants by promoting exchange among artists from different regions of Cuba and the world, as well as the discovery of new forms of pictorial expression that enrich their creative processes.

For his part, Polo Castellanos, the invited Mexican artist, underscored that the event is among the oldest mural painting events internationally, and highlighted its influence on his artistic development, particularly the lessons related to collective and identity-based muralism.

The artist will open the exhibition “Miradas desde abajo” (Views from Below), conceived as a blend of printmaking, monotype, and photographic transfer, based on various social movements that challenge existing discourses in Mexico, and inspired by themes such as indigenism, peace, and justice.

In this edition, the Santiago branch of the Alliance Française is hosting the creation of a mural by Cuban and Mexican artists, whose unveiling is scheduled for the final days of the event.

The artwork is being developed as a creative process open to public interaction.

The 17th International Biennial of Mural Painting, Internos 2026, extended until January 20, pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Luis Díaz Oduardo Cultural Workshop and to the event's founders, including the renowned artist Alberto Lescay, recipient of the National Prize for Visual Arts.
