Diaz-Canel mourns death of icon of Cuban folklore



HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 15 (ACN) Miguel Diaz-Canel, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, mourned today the death of Zenaida Armenteros, winner of the 2005 National Dance Prize.

On X, the president sent his condolences to her family and colleagues from the National Folkloric Ensemble, of which she was the founder and principal dancer.

Born in Havana on January 10, 1931, Armenteros became one of the greatest exponents of Cuban folklore and was known as the Ayagba de Cuba (The Queen in Yoruba).

She was a member of the repertoire of classical works of the National Folkloric Ensemble of Cuba and performed a variety of roles, from Dance Corps to First Dancer, First Actress, and First Singer of the National Folkloric Ensemble.

Among the awards she has received throughout his career are the Artist of Merit from the Cuban Writers and Artists Association; the Raul Gomez Garcia Medal; the Jesus Menendez Medal from the Cuban Workers' Federation, the Alejo Carpentier Medal; the Diploma of Artistic Merit from the National Museum of Music; the Laurel Wreath and World Karting Confederation Trophy from the Principality of Monaco and Monte Carlo, among many others.
