Cuba opens exhibition dedicated to relations with the Vatican

HAVANA, Cuba, Jun 5 (ACN) The exhibition "A un latido de distancia” [A heartbeat away] opened in this city as part of the celebrations for the 90th anniversary of uninterrupted diplomatic relations between Cuba and the Vatican, a milestone to be celebrated on June 7.

The event takes place in the context of the official visit that Monsignor Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations of the Holy See is paying to the island.

Cuban Minister of Culture Alpidio Alonso Grau said that the exhibition―made up of religious and spiritual works produced by 13 local artists―reflects the long-standing ties between the two States and their progress over time based on constructive dialogue, respect, and the willingness to overcome challenges and find a way to build bridges of understanding.

Lesbia Vent Dumois, Cuban Heroine of Labor and winner of the 2019 National Visual Arts Award, remarked that the idea was to assemble in one place the works that the artists have sent to the Holy See as a tribute to these renowned figures of national culture as well as to the Popes who have visited the island and their impact on Cuban art’s approach to religious motifs.

The exhibition features works by Wilfredo Lam, Roberto Fabelo, Victor Manuel, Alexis Leyva (Kcho), Arturo Montoro, Zaira del Rio and Carlos Quintana, among others.
