A brain child of Fidel, the International Book Fair lives on

PINAR DEL RÍO, Cuba, Mar 5 (ACN) The fact that the International Book Fair has gone beyond Havana since the early 2000s to reach every Cuban province ratifies the will of the State to promote literature and reading.

“This has to do with Fidel Castro and his spirit, for he came up with and gave shape to the idea of a Book Fair and kept constantly in touch with our writers”, Cuban Book Institute president Juan Rodríguez Cabrera said following the opening of the event in the province of Pinar del Río. “The Fair is about more than just books and transcends even the Ministry of Culture (…) It is no doubt the result of a supreme effort given the present situation of economic and energy problems”.

This year, the most important cultural event of the nation salutes, among others, the 25th anniversary of the Sistema de Ediciones Territoriales (Regional Publishing System, SET), responsible for the first publications of most Cuban writers.
