HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 26 (ACN) The Cuban contemporary dance company Malpaso capped a successful tour around the United States on Sunday with its tenth presentation in what is almost its second home, New York’s Joyce Theater, where it first performed in March 2014.
Malpaso co-founder and executive director Fernando Sáez said that the troupe’s overall result is due to the quality of the dancers, the musicians and the audiences that ensured every performance was a sell-out.
Made up of 11 dancers, Malpaso arrived in the United States on January 13 and, two days later, they performed at the Byham Theatre, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and then at the Emerson Paramount Center in Boston, Massachusetts.
They brought four of their works to the U.S., namely Ara (by the group's founder and artistic director Osnel Delgado); Retrato de familia (by Cuban choreographer Esteban Aguilar); Vértigo (by the Spanish Susana Pous) and Vals indomable (by the Canadian choreographer Aszure Barton).
Joining Malpaso on this tour was Grettel Morejón, prima ballerina of the National Ballet of Cuba.
On the cultural ties between Cuba and the U.S., Sáez pointed out that they are clear and obvious, especially if one looks at the history of dance, and stressed that culture is beyond politics.
“Even if these are difficult times, there will always be a window, a bridge or at least a tightrope to cross”, he underscored.
