Havana hosts, as of today, 20th Jazz Colloquium "Leonardo Acosta in memoriam"

HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 20 (ACN) As part of the 40th edition of the Jazz Plaza International Festival, the 20th International Jazz Colloquium "Leonardo Acosta in memoriam", a theoretical section of the prestigious musical event, will kick off today in Havana.

Neris Gonzalez Bello, founder and general coordinator of the colloquium, told the Cuban News Agency that the event will last two weeks, starting this Monday and ending on January 24 at the Villena and Caracol halls of the Cuban Writers and Artists Association (Uneac by its Spanish acronym), while it will take its habitual stage at the Cuban Art Factory (FAC) from January 27 to February 1.

At Uneac, with specialists from the Music and Film, Radio and Television associations, Gonzalez Bello explained, film debate sessions will be held, in synergy with the dedications of the Jazz Plaza Festival, which will pay tribute to the 65th anniversary of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry, with nationally produced documentaries on jazz.

During the colloquium, said the musicologist, tribute will be paid to masters Frank Fernandez and Pancho Amat on their 80th and 75th birthdays, respectively, and will also serve as a tribute to Danilo Orozco (1944-2013) on the eight decades since his birth and who, in her opinion, was an essential figure in the conception of this academic section of the festival.

She added that honors will also be paid to Marta Valdes (1934-2024), an essential name in Cuban music.

Gonzalez Bello detailed that the Colloquium "Leonardo Acosta in memoriam" will be the opportunity for presentations of records and audiovisuals related to jazz that were produced during 2024.

The musicologist said that there will be a day entirely dedicated to the industry, which will receive important representatives from around the world and stressed that on January 30 the colloquium will focus its debates and panels on women entrepreneurs in music with participants from Cuba, Holland, Spain, Portugal, Colombia and South Korea.

For the first time, a space will be dedicated to a dialogue on the relationship between jazz and photography, which will reach its most special moments with the opening of the personal exhibition In jazz we trust, by Lilien Trujillo Viton, and the collective exhibition Retrospectiva, both at FAC's Nave 3, said the coordinator.

The 40th edition of this great event will begin on January 26 and will be extended to Santiago de Cuba and, for the first time, to the province of Villa Clara, located in the center of the country.
