Outstanding Cuban jurist receives National Law Award



HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 27 (ACN) The Carlos Manuel de Cespedes National Law Award, corresponding to 2023, was presented today, in a solemn ceremony held at the Aula Magna of the University of Havana, to Jose Luis Toledo Santander.

Cuban National Jurists Association (UNJC by its Spanish acronym) awards the prize annually, with the purpose of recognizing the life and work of jurists who have maintained an outstanding professional career in teaching, research or the practice of the profession, so the jury unanimously decided to grant the distinction to Toledo Santander, who currently serves as head of the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee of the National Assembly of People's Power (ANPP by its Spanish acronym).

The occasion was accompanied by praise from Ana Maria Mari Machado, vice president of the ANPP and the Council of State, Yamila Peña Ojeda, Attorney General of the Republic, Oscar Manuel Silvera Martinez, Minister of Justice, and his colleague Juan Mendoza Diaz, also a deserving recipient of the award.

Jose Luis Toledo Santander worked at the beginning of his career in the General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic with outstanding results that led him to become the head of this body in the central provinces of Sancti Spiritus, Ciego de Avila and the western Havana until he was appointed Deputy Attorney General of the Republic.

Subsequently, he held the position of Dean of the Faculty of Law of the University of Havana, leading the process of teaching and scientific development of the center of high studies, where he achieved his status as PhD in Juridical Sciences, Master in Public Law, specialist in Criminal Sciences and full professor.

As deputy to the ANPP for the municipality of Plaza de la Revolucion in Havana, he was a member of the committees of National Defense and Constitutional and Legal Affairs, being elected president of the latter, a position he holds to date and from which he has integrated the drafting committees of important laws of the country, such as the Constitutional Reform of 2002, the drafting of the current Constitution of the Republic in 2019 and the Family Code, as well as all the laws of constitutional development approved since the entry into force of the current Magna Carta.
