Havana, Feb 1 (ACN) US writers, members of the Busboys and Poets Cultural Hub, visiting Cuba paid homage on Thursday to National Poet Nicolas Guillen at the National Union of Writers and Artists (UNEAC).
Joined by UNEAC president Martha Bonet de la Cruz, the visitors admired the plaque paying honor to Nicolas Guillen and to African-American social activist and journalist Langston Hughes, which recalls the ever-lasting relationship between the two outstanding personalities.
The plaque was unveiled during a visit in 2022 by activist Andy Shallal to recall Guillen and Hughes and their struggle for justice, the elimination of racism and the preservation of African roots.
The strong friendship bonds between Guillen and Langston started in 1930 in Havana, mainly promoted by journalist Jose Antonio Fernandez de Castro. On that occasion the two poets exchange verses and ideas under the sound of Havana ballads, as Guillen described Langston as one of the souls most interested in black race, of which he left his imprint during his lifetime.
Bonet de la Cruz briefed the visitors about her organization and its contribution to the defense of Cuban identity.
