Miguel Barnet earns National Cultural Heritage Award



HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 26 (ACN) Writer and ethnologist Miguel Barnet Lanza received the 2023 National Cultural Heritage Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his extensive research work for the benefit of our identity values and the promotion of Cuban culture.

Barnet Lanza won the 1994 National Literature Award. He is founder of the Union of Cuban Writers and Artists and his works have been translated into several languages, which make him one of the country's most internationally renowned writers.

From a very young age he specialized in ethnological research and in the transculturation of religions of African origin in Cuba and the Caribbean.

He also promoted UNESCO’s Slave Route Project and its related museum, located in the San Severino Castle, in the Cuban city of Matanzas.
