Cuban president mourns death of singer-songwriter Pablo Milanes



HAVANA, Cuba, Nov 22 (ACN) Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Cuban communist party and president of the country, expressed his sorrow today, from Russia, over the death of the outstanding Cuban singer-songwriter Pablo Milanes at 79.

The president on Twitter sent condolences to his widow and children, while defining the troubadour as one of the country's greatest musicians.

"Pablo has died, we read upon waking up Tuesday in #Russia and the pain comes with the news. Physically disappears one of our greatest musicians. Inseparable voice of the soundtrack of our generation. My condolences to his widow and children, to #Cuba."

Several authorities of the island have expressed their closeness to his loved ones since the news of his death in Madrid, Spain, in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

On the same social network, Esteban Lazo Hernandez, president of the National Assembly of People's Power, lamented the loss of the founder of the New Cuban Trova Movement.

There are no words that can express the enormity of the loss that the death of Pablo Milanes represents for Cuban culture, his poetic and musical legacy is immortal, said the minister of culture, Alpidio Alonso Grau, in a tweet.

Since last November 13, according to an official statement issued by his artistic company, Pablo Milanes was hospitalized in the Spanish capital receiving medical treatment for the oncohematological disease he had been suffering from for some years.

His last presentation in Cuba was a concert in the Ciudad Deportiva de La Habana, on June 21, 2022.
