Cuba mourns death of prestigious intellectual



HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 11 (ACN) Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, first secretary of the Central Committee of the Cuban communist party and president of the country, mourned today the death of Rogelio Martinez Fure, an outstanding Cuban folklorist, ethnologist and researcher.

On Twitter, the Cuban head of state sent condolences to family and friends, while assuring the permanence in time of his legacy of wisdom.

In a tweet, Ines Maria Chapman, Cuban deputy prime minister, conveyed her feelings for the loss and condolences to his loved ones.

Rogelio Martinez Furé has died, a wise man, a poet, a man who made an immeasurable contribution to Cuban culture, said Alpidio Alonso Grau, minister of culture, on the same social network.

At the same time, Abel Prieto, president of Casa de las Americas, lamented the loss of such an important creator and expressed his condolences to his loved ones.

For his part, the president of the National Association of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC by its Spanish acronym), Luis Morlote Rivas, expressed his sadness for the death of the poet and researcher, whom he defined as a great of Cuban culture.

Rogelio Martinez Fure died on Monday, at 85 and left a legacy to the studies of culture and traditional expressions on the island.

Doctor Honoris Causa of the Higher Institute of Arts in Havana, he was founder of the National Folkloric Ensemble and founding member of UNEAC, was distinguished with the National Cultural Research Award (2001), the National Dance Award (2002), the Fernando Ortiz International Award (2004), and the National Literature Award (2015).
