HAVANA, Cuba, January 6 (ACN) The delivery of 150 tractors to individual producers and cooperatives in several provinces confirmed on Monday the Cuban tobacco sector's commitment to boosting its development through more efficient technologies, the Tabacuba Business Group told the Granma newspaper.
With this transaction, the number of such machines imported in 2025 has risen to 300, at the request of farmers and production units who decided to invest part of their foreign currency earnings in acquiring machinery.
José Liván Font, First Vice President of Tabacuba, stated that the approved financing scheme allowed for the purchase of the tractors, in an activity that contributes hundreds of millions of dollars annually to the national economy.
Font emphasized that tobacco farmers are allocating part of their foreign currency earnings to the development of the crop and specified that the Group provides the equipment at the same purchase price, without making a profit on its sale, with the aim of expanding access for farmers and cooperatives.
As a new feature, he mentioned the possibility of paying in two installments for those who cannot pay in cash. For 2026, the Vice President announced the arrival of another 300 tractors and the necessary agricultural implements for soil preparation.
During the handover ceremony of 75 pieces of equipment in Pinar del Río, a province that contributes 70 % of the country's tobacco harvest, Font assured that photovoltaic systems for irrigation and lighting of family-run small-scale tobacco picking operations have also been made available to producers, promoting energy independence, savings, and efficiency.
"These are resources for our producers that improve their working conditions and allow them to increase production and income," the official stated.
