HAVANA, Cuba, December 5 (ACN) Ernesto Soberon Guzman, Cuban ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, denounced the illegal, inhumane, and devastating nature of unilateral coercive measures on Thursday at the General Assembly, on the occasion of the "International Day against Unilateral Coercive Measures."
According to the Cubaminrex website, the diplomat stated that these mechanisms violate international law, punish entire populations, and undermine global cooperation.
He emphasized that they constitute one of the main obstacles to sustainable development and the exercise of human rights.
Soberon recalled that for more than six decades Cuba has suffered an economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States, reinforced by extraterritorial actions and smear campaigns against Cuban medical cooperation.
He pointed out that the arbitrary inclusion of the island on the list of state sponsors of terrorism exacerbates the damage, which, between March 2024 and February 2025 alone, exceeded $7.5 billion, affecting access to medicines, food, and fuel.
The Permanent Representative warned that these policies currently affect 76 developing countries and more than a third of the world's population, while the United States seeks to establish itself as the global arbiter of who can trade or develop.
"No state is above the Charter of the United Nations," declared Soberon Guzman, demanding the immediate, total, and unconditional lifting of these measures.
Cuba supported the appointment of a Special Adviser on Unilateral Coercive Measures and reiterated its commitment to a more just and inclusive international order, based on respect for sovereignty and equality among states.
