HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 13 (ACN) Cuban Institute of Meteorology (INSMET) celebrated its six-decade anniversary today and the commemoration of this milestone once again demonstrates the commitment of these professionals to constantly monitoring the safety of all residents of Cuba in the face of extreme hydrometeorological phenomena.
The event commemorating the date took place in the "Camilo Cienfuegos" Chamber of the National Capitol, the same site where the institution was founded in 1965, a coincidence highlighted in his speech by Celso Pasos, director of the institution.
He also highlighted the evolution the center has undergone since its inception, when it barely had qualified personnel to carry out its work, and its current ranks are comprised of highly qualified scientists and professionals, whose potential is put into practice through their participation in the 56 research projects they develop and which are linked to programs of national and regional interest.
The event was chaired by Eduardo Martinez Diaz, Vice Minister of the Republic of Cuba, and was attended by a broad representation of INSMET employees, as well as other authorities from related institutions.
Armando Rodriguez Batista, head of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment (CITMA by its Spanish acronym), recognized the work carried out by INSMET since its founding and reflected on the importance of the institution by recalling the close relationship that was created between its employees and the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz.
At the event, representatives of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, its Environmental Agency, and the Civil Defense General Staff presented recognition to INSMET for its work in service to Cuba.
For its part, the organization awarded the commemorative medal for its 60th anniversary to prominent figures, organizations, and institutions that have collaborated in achieving the institute's objectives.
Mario Emilio Rodriguez was one of the founders who received the posthumous recognition. His daughters, Silvia and Maria Rodriguez, commented on the pride their father felt in belonging to the institute and emotionally recalled his intense work in support of Cuban meteorology.
