Cuban foundation boosts Sustainable Municipality Model in Havana

HAVANA, Cuba, Sep 3 (ACN) The Antonio Núñez Jiménez Foundation for Nature and Man confirmed its intention to keep implementing differentiated waste collection systems and providing training, in coordination with the relevant authorities and organizations, to make Havana’s municipalities sustainable.

“We combine education and citizen engagement to promote the transformation of waste into sustainable opportunities”, said Roberto Pérez Rivero, coordinator of the Nature and Society Project for the group, in reference to recent successful experiences in the city involving children, parents, neighbors and volunteers.

Implemented in several neighborhoods and People's Councils across Havana, the effort was focused on the collection of waste directly from people’s homes with a view to recycling.

Similar actions are under way through other Local Development Projects financed by the National Environmental Fund coordinated by the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment with an annual budget of 14 million pesos, a movement revealing of the fact that institutional support can benefit other locations.
