Permanent Commission on Education for Peace to denounce illegality of Guantanamo Naval Base

 HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 19 (ACN) The illegality of the Guantanamo Naval Base, in territory occupied by the U.S. government since 1903 against the sovereign will of the Cuban people, is the main topic of the Permanent Commission of Education for Peace (Edupaz), which meets today in Havana, Cuba's capital.

A history we cannot forget, the illegality of the Guantanamo Naval Base, is the title of the lecture to be given by Doris Quintana Cruz, PhD in Juridical Sciences, Professor of International and Humanitarian Law.

The conference of Quintana Cruz, also Honorary Member of the Cuban Society of Law, of the Cuban Jurists Association, will be in the first meeting of Edupaz in 2024, to be held at the headquarters of the Economic Society of Friends of the Country (SEAP by its Spanish acronym).

Specialists of the institution also informed the Cuban News Agency that there will be a presentation by Professor Miriam Marañon Santa Cruz, president of the aforementioned commission, on the lines of thought and actions of her group.

The Guantanamo Naval Base is arbitrarily located in an area of 117.6 square kilometers of the national territory, as a result of an Agreement for the Coal and Naval Stations, signed between the U.S. and Cuban governments.

The event took place in circumstances in which Cuba had no independence whatsoever as a result of the imposition of an amendment approved by the U.S. Congress and signed by President William McKinley in March 1901.

At that time, it was known as the Platt Amendment, while the Cuban territory was occupied by the U.S. Army, after its intervention in the war of independence against the Spanish metropolis.

After the triumph of the Cuban Revolution in 1959, the United States turned it into a permanent focus of threat, provocation and violation of national sovereignty.
