Cuba Says Developed Countries have not Honored Environmental Commitment

Havana, Nov 11 (ACN) Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez denounced that developed nations have not honored their commitment to the Adaptation Fund to Climate Change.

In tune with the annual UN summit on climate change (COP 27), underway in Egypt, Rodriguez claimed that developed nations should make their announcements and promises concrete facts.

The Adaptation Fund was set up in 2001 and entered into effect in 2007 aiming at assisting developing countries, particularly those which are vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change, to help them face the cost of adapting to the event.

The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, said that the necessities for adaptation in the world are calculated at between 160 and 340 billion dollars by the end of this decade and up to 565 billion dollars up to 2050.

Meanwhile, the commitment adopted by developed countries to contribute 100 billion dollars to address the adaptation has not yet materialized, though it was due for the year 2020.

At COP 27, the states must submit a credible road map as how to allocate the funds, not as loans but as grants, said Guterres.

The Conference of the Parties (COP) gathers the states signatories of the 1992 UN Frame Convention on Climate Change, which recognizes as common concern the changes of climate and their adverse effects.

This year the forum takes place in the city of Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt up to November 18.
