HAVANA, Cuba, Aug 17 (ACN) Authorities of Cubana de Aviacion airline assured on Monday in Havana that flights to Spain will continue despite the suspension of the Bank Settlement Plam (BSP) payment compensation mechanism in that European market.
Regarding the measure notified by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and reported by the international media, Venus Rodriguez Hernandez, legal and insurance director of Cubana de Aviacion, declared that the airline will fulfill its commitments to its customers and will not cease operations.
Karelia Fernandez Rivero, Economic and Accounting Director of Cubana de Aviacion, explained that the BSP is an invoicing system created by IATA to facilitate the work between agencies and airlines and that it allows airlines to have a better financial control over the sales made for their flights.
That is why the Caribbean nation's airline is adjusting its commercial strategies in the Spanish market, since the bank that makes the compensations has declared the impossibility of continuing its activities.
The arbitrary measure, which puts Cubana de Aviacion at a disadvantage with respect to other international airlines, is yet another consequence of the U.S. economic and commercial blockade, which has had a serious impact on the airline's operations, along with the effects of the health crisis, from which no company in the sector has avoided.
Rodriguez Hernandez assured the press that this is not the first time they have received this notification of cancellation of the BSP, in previous occasions the lATA has adopted this measure in markets such as Mexico, France and Italy.
For her part, Fernandez Rivero clarified that this provision is usually adopted by IATA when there is a risk that the airline becomes insolvent or ceases operations, however, currently Cubana de Aviacion has no debts with the international organization.
Through the IATA Clearing House, she added, we make the weekly payments that correspond to the debts that may derive from the relations between airlines, for that reason that argument does not typify for the suspension of the BSP in Spain.
Cuban airline, as a founding and active member of IATA, has formalized its complaint before the organization.
