SANTIAGO DE CUBA, Cuba, Jan 28 (ACN) José Luis de la Tejera, Honorary President of the José Martí Cultural Society in this province, holds to have grown up with a book of the Apostle in his hands, first of children's stories and then of verses and other genres.
In statements to the Cuban News Agency, the fervent student of the patriot highlighted Martí’s ability to organize the struggles for independence and still find the time to put down on paper so many works full of values and knowledge as yet current in our times.
It was as a student in the School of Letters of Universidad de Oriente that he went much deeper into the revolutionary’s vast and truly amazing literary creation, mostly brimming with his love of America and particularly of his homeland, of which he read as much as he could lay his hands on.
He took part of most of the events related to Marti, and when the local José Martí Cultural Society was created in 1997, many intellectuals set their eyes on him as the right person to lead that instance, which he did for more than 15 years since.
After Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz’s decease, José Luis devoted himself to extol both historical figures of the Revolution.
He stressed that in this difficult situation caused by COVID-19, a healthy option for those who should stay at home is reading Martí’s books and encouraging young people and children to do the same, as in each text they will find a lesson about how to rise to big challenges, just like Martí did in the turbulent years of the 19th century when he put his heart and soul into the defense of a just cause, he said finally.
