HAVANA, Cuba, Oct 2 (ACN) Bruno Rodriguez, Cuba's Foreign Minister, and Jose Cesar Augusto, Angola's outgoing ambassador to Havana, expressed their will to strengthen bilateral bonds.
We highlight our historic ties of sisterhood, solidarity and cooperation, as well as the will of both governments to deepen relations, Rodriguez said on Twitter when reporting a meeting with Augusto, who is ending his mission in Havana.
The meeting, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was also attended by the director of Sub-Saharan Africa, Gisela Garcia, who was ambassador to Angola.
Havana and Luanda established diplomatic ties in November 1975, a few days after the independence proclaimed by President Antonio Agostinho Neto, at the head of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA).
Previously, the Cuban authorities offered military aid to the MPLA in the defense against the armed aggression of the then apartheid regime in South Africa and other countries in the region supported by the United States.
After independence - and up to date - both nations maintain fluid civil and military cooperation. Currently, there are about 2,000 aid workers in Angola, mainly in the health, education and construction sectors, and hundreds of Angolans have graduated or studied in Cuba.
