HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 4 (ACN) In relation to the so-called Havana Syndrome, Dr. Mitchel Valdes-Sosa, director general of the Cuban Center for Neuroscience (CNEURO by its Spanish acronym), stated at an international event that there are no scientific elements to prove the existence of any deliberate attack on diplomats from the United States and Canada.
Valdes-Sosa, who is also a member of the Committee of Cuban experts that investigated the event, said the term corresponds more to a media fabrication by certain sectors than to a solid scientific basis.
He noted there is clear evidence of pre-existing diseases in diplomats, for example, head trauma and hearing loss.
Organized by the Cuban Academy of Sciences in coordination with CNEURO, the international event kicked off last Monday and is attended by experts from Cuba, UK, New Zealand and USA.
The debates have been productive and despite no agreement on the incidents, the experts dismissed the U.S. government's theories of sonic attack first and microwaves later, the Cuban expert continued.
Undoubtedly the stress factors, Valdes-Sosa asserted, may have played an important role and nobody denies that the diplomats had symptoms of discomfort such as headaches, lack of sleep, among others.
Another of the hypotheses discussed is the one proposed by Canadian scientists about the effects caused by the excessive use of insecticides inside their embassy in Havana, a theory that according to the Cuban expert generates some uncertainty because the local population has not been involved in a similar phenomenon.
For his part, New Zealand professor Robert E. Bartholomew stated there is too much politics involved in the case and not enough science, and he urged the United States to socialize its research through the principles of collaboration and transparency.
At present, the US government is using the alleged health incidents of its diplomats for political purposes to make relations with Cuba more difficult.
