HAVANA, Cuba, Mar 4 (ACN) The continued implementation of the Program on Prevention and Social Services and the country’s employment management practices were addressed at the annual review of the Ministry of Labor and Social Security (MTSS), presided over by Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel.
Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz praised the MTSS for its efforts to update the policy on persons for the care of people with wandering behavior, the legal recognition of Cuban Sign Language as the official language of the deaf community, and the improvement of community-based social services provided by home health and social workers and through teleassistance programs.
He also urged to reduce the current 20% informal employment rate, which is in violation of the Labor Code inasmuch as it maintains workers in a status of voluntary vulnerability to the detriment of their rights to social security, and recognized that the plans to increase people’s purchasing power remain an unresolved matter,.
Marta Elena Feitó Cabrera, Minister of Labor and Social Security, highlighted as achievements in 2024 the agreements with the universities to help economically and socially vulnerable students and the creation of 209,804 jobs nationwide, as well as the implementation of new salary policies in a number of sectors and several projects to increase the use of science and innovation, digital transformation, and social communications.
Likewise, the official said that the MTSS is working on action plans to create new jobs, streamline social policies for the benefit of vulnerable persons, and launch digital platforms to facilitate access to jobs and carry out studies on the island’s main needs in terms of labor and social security.
