HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 26 (ACN) Sunil Kumara Gamagem, Sri Lankan Minister of Youth and Sports, stated today his country's interest in strengthening sports cooperation with Cuba.
At a meeting in Colombo with Cuban Ambassador Andres Gonzalez, the recently appointed official referred to the development of sports in the Caribbean island after the triumph of the Revolution on January 1, 1959 and learned about the large-scale practice of sports as the reason behind Cuba’s major achievements in regional and world competitions.
Cuba and Sri Lanka established diplomatic relations 65 years ago, and every year Cuba grants Sri Lankan youths fully funded scholarships to study medicine.
Following his election, Sri Lankan president Anura Kumara Dissanayake ratified to his Cuban counterpart, Miguel Díaz-Canel, his intention to work together for world peace and justice.
